Detective Katie Scott is an Afghanistan veteran and a detective. When returning to active law enforcement duty, Katie is assigned to cold cases. Boxes filled with reports, evidence or lack thereof are stuffed in her new office in the basement. Her old companion is a German Shepard that she used to deploy in Afghanistan. Her unofficial PTSD could kick in at any moment putting at risk her life. As the first investigation, she chooses a rather recent case, left unsolved only six months before. It is a kidnap case. When the woman Katie was trying to protect is murdered, we are thrown into the chase of the murderer, and everyone seems to be a suspect.
Her Last Whisper (Detective Katie Scott Book 2) can be read without the previous instalment. It’s a self conclusive story but it makes you want to read more about Katie. Jennifer Chase’s experience in police forensic and criminology is probably helpful in creating a sense of reality. So much so that she never broke my suspension of disbelief. Something hard to believe in a thriller involving law enforcement and war veterans is the lack of cussing. And yet, the author gives us a clean book with a great flow. But what I liked, even more, was Katie’s fragility, because it is what makes her real and not the usual hot kick-ass. She makes mistakes as all humans do. I read the story in only two days. If you like mystery books, this page-turner is for you.
