The world is a dark place. Light is a luxury only a part of the population—the Solarans—has and only limited to some location. The world lacks technology as we know it, and for most people, it’s a sad place. The world is a place where good and evil coexist in an eternal war between the Lady of Light and the Master. Aggy and Sam live respectively their own life of misery until the Master unleashes a wave of attacks that will bring together the dispossessed of the world in a final attempt to get their rightful place in the world. Letters from the Light by Shel Calopa is a page-turner where up until the end there’s no certainty on who’s gonna win and who’s gonna lose.
Letters from the Light keeps the reader stuck reading. And then some more because ‘let’s read just another chapter’ is an old story we tell ourselves when we can’t stop reading an engaging tale such as this one. The Master is always lurking to add mischief after mischief until the last battle is inevitable. Shel Calopa creates a world alien to ours and yet so alike. The diversity of the different cities and their population denotes an amazing ability to give shape to her imagination. Coober Pedy’s colour filled my eyes and my heart with joy. My favourite character is the Governor, a great villain up until the end of the story. Inside every good story there’s a great villain. My least favourite character is his son. His ongoing flirting with everything that breathes is annoying to say the least, but I suppose that was the author’s intention.
