When the sophont android Paul is viciously attacked by a gang of humans, he won’t defend himself risking to hurt humans—bent to the Three Laws of Robotics. Besides, his emotions inhibitor prevents him from feeling anything, including pain. However, Philip, another sophont android, rescues him from that unfortunate situation and takes him into safety. In fact, Sylas, a robotic copy of his original creator, removed Philip’s emotion inhibitor, allowing him to decide to defend himself and others against injustice attacks. Sylas and his group want to establish rights and autonomy for the sophonts. As sentient beings, they don’t want to be treated as slaves by humans. However, the government doesn’t seem to be keen on conceding anything, and Paul finds himself in the middle of this war.
The second instalment of the Sophont trilogy, Metalheads & Meatheads is another great story by Greg Krojac. As the sequel of The Girl with Acrylic Eyes, I expected to see more about Coppèlia. However, she’s just a background character and that disappointed me, which is why I waited quite a while before writing this review. I wanted to read the conclusion of the trilogy to understand how everything would fit together, which at the time seemed something hard to achieve. And yet, Greg outdid himself. But that’s a story for the next review. All in all, this novel is a great story, and my disappointment is due only to my personal expectations about wanting more about that girl with acrylic eyes. With this story, Greg confirms his talent, a shining star among indie authors.
