When Stars Take Flight (Galactic Dreams) by Bethany Maines

When Stars Take Flight (Galactic Dreams) by Bethany Maines is a classic romance story in space. Lina is an intergalactic ambassador on a mission from Earth. Captured by the To’Anda—a toad-like alien species— who believe she is a spy, she escapes with the help of the real spay, a Ránfuglar male called Sparrow, just like the bird (but I could not help thinking about Jack Sparrow all along). In a series of twists and plots, she ends up from the frying pan into the fire, captured by the Moliter, another alien species and tortured by the count. In the meantime, the relationship between Lina and Sparrow gets deeper and deeper.

When I started reading When Stars Take Flight (Galactic Dreams) by Bethany Maines I wondered what kind of book I was reading, then I started laughing my ass off. The first scene is so hilarious that left me speechless for a moment, but it was love at first sight. I will refrain from saying more to avoid spoilers. The author depicts a universe where technology allowed humans to evolve into a great variety of species who became alienated among themselves in the past. Now, the new intergalactic alliance wants to re-establish contact with the other species. This is not only a romantic story, but there’s also a great deal of good worldbuilding behind it. And worldbuilding is something the author does very well. If you’re curious about weird alien species, strange alien worlds, and don’t mind the love story then this book is for you.
